Grand Popo.

This past weekend, 5 American girls and our British "bodyguard" went on a 2 hour road trip west to a Beach Resort called Grand Popo. We left Saturday morning and returned Sunday evening.
Our taxi was a mini-bus (van). The driver had to put our bags on top of the car. It was able to hold 9 people, and we took full advantage of that to make it cheaper.
The guys were in the back seat... some in the middle and...
Christina and Kelly sat behind the driver facing the back the whole trip.
We were however thankful for the the space we had because most mini-buses that we passed had twice as many people.
Funny story... we also noticed that the van's speedometer was on zero km (the whole time)... it didn't work, but that did not stop our driver from going however fast he wanted :)

Some of things we saw along our drive:
A wreck with the zimijans.
A car fully loaded with bananas.
Market.
Gas station.
Furniture anyone?
If you look closely this car has a ton of chickens on top... only in Africa.

We have arrived...
Grand Popo... isn't it beautiful?
Our camp site. Only $3.00 a night and if you look closely you can see the entrance to the beach.
Picture Perfect!

The girls with our bodyguard Paul.
Having a little too much fun with the machete (they use it to open the coconuts).

Sunset... really cloudy, but still thought it was beautiful.
Dinner by the pool.
Sunday Adventure:
Began by cramming 7 of us into a taxi.
Then getting in a canoe, made from a hollow out tree.
Ready for our trip and excited that we didn't have to paddle.
Visiting and going through the mangrove trees where we also saw tree crabs.
Having fun.
Fishing Village.
Inside the basket. The basket is kept in the water to store the fish and other sea animals until they are ready to eat them.
The boy that fetched us a coconut.
Enjoying or pretending to enjoy the coconut.
Arriving to Heve, the Voodoo Village.
When we first arrived the majority of the village was gathered around collecting new mats, rice and other supplies, provided by the government after a recent flood destroyed most of the village peoples belongings. Everyone we met were so friendly at the village, we we greeted with hand shakes and even met the Voodoo Chief. Our guide took us around the village...

One of the gods.

Paintings of items that are used in worship.
A painting of the spirit that people see at night.
Just another day in Africa.
